Because the brass oxidizes, it needs to be polished to retain the gold. As for your hardware you can try a gentle acidic solution of 1 part lemon or orange juice to 3 parts water, apply with a q-tip, allow to sit for a minute or so, wipe off with a slightly damp cloth, and then dry with a soft towel.
