I think any alleged concerns about fading are due to the use of a metal bezel, as apposed to ceramic which is said to be impervious to fading, rather than any real world issues. Meaning, the bezel will fade eventually, but not for 10-20 years. They would also likely want to replace those faded sundial hands as well. The only other option is to hunt around for a used bezel on forums or EBay that is in better shape. But that will likely be more frustrating than it is worth in terms of savings.
My circa '95 SMP 2551.80 has a very faded bezel and patina on the dial. The seconds hand tip is a nice creamy almost peach color.
